During this Hungary Birds and Wildlife Photo Tour 2022 you will have unlimited access to 23 professionally-created photo blinds.  Yes, you read that right:  23 of them!

These photo blinds (called “hides” in Europe) – part of Hungary’s hide network – are a wildlife photographer’s dream!  They utilize the one-way glass technique pioneered by Bence Máté, creator of the nearly two dozen blinds that’ll be at our disposal.

LIMITED to eight (8)  ~ SOLD OUT! ~  Please email me to be on the wait list.
ALL-INCLUSIVE: Includes meals, lodging (SINGLE-occupancy), and ground transportation.

Sousliks (European ground squirrels) are fun to photograph! Image by Bence Máté.

This photo tour takes place on private lands nestled into Kiskunság National Park.  Created in 1975, this UNESCO biosphere reserve includes nine (9) distinct units of preserved habitat.

May is prime time for spring bird migration in Hungary and we’ve scheduled your tour to take advantage of that. Over the years, 178 bird species have been documented in the gardens of the photo ranch where we stay and play.

In addition to birds, we’ll keep our eyes out for other animals native to this region, including: Eurasian otters, white-bellied hedgehogs, red fox, European hares, sousliks (European ground squirrels), European hamsters, toads and Roe deer.

The photo blinds at your disposal are uniquely located. Some are at water stations, while others are on a lakeshore, in a meadow bog, or in forested habitat. One blind is a tower, specially created to photograph Little Owls and their behavior along with other nesting birds.

Some of the ranch’s most photogenic residents — European Bee-eaters, Rollers and Eurasian Hoopoes – have eye-level blinds devoted to them.  So, too, do the quirky and fun-to-watch sousliks (ground squirrels).

Two of the hides have been perfected for night photography.  One even boasts beds, heat and wifi for your comfort while you capture images of nocturnal wildlife.

This is a scouting trip; therefore, we’ve priced it at a discount. A “scouting trip” means you’ll accompany us our first time to this location. Because of that there may be a few bumps along the way, but the low price more than makes up for it.

NOTE: Because this is a scouting trip and I have not yet photographed in Kiskunság National Park, Bence was kind enough to let us use his images to show you how awesome the wildlife photography is at the photo ranch.

Friday, May 20, 2022
Arrive in Budapest, capital of Hungary in the late-afternoon. Our hotel is an easy walk from the airport to our hotel — about 300 feet from Terminal 2.

Settle into your room for a little relaxation before we meet for our Welcome Dinner (tentatively set for 7:00 pm).

Sleep well in your single-occupancy room (unless traveling with another & you desire to share a room, of course).

OVERNIGHT:  Ibis Styles Budapest Airport Hotel

Saturday, May 21, 2022
After breakfast, hop into your ground transportation and head to photography fun!  Our destination is about 1 ½ – 2 hours from the airport.

Upon arriving, we’ll eat lunch and settle into our rooms at the photo ranch.  Then, a quick orientation and introduction to the blinds that will be at your disposal during the tour.

After a short break, head to your first photo blind of the trip and have a blast photographing to your heart’s content!

That evening over dinner, we’ll plan the next day, discussing which blinds you want to try out. Choose blinds for your morning and evening shoots (and in between, too, if you so choose). Most blinds hold three (3) photographers at a time.  Throughout the tour you will get a chance to utilize each blind at least once.

Sleep well or continue photographing from one of the two night blinds.

Bence Máté took this image of a Eurasian Hoopoe from one of the blinds he pioneered.

Sunday – Friday, May 22 – May 27, 2022
Eat a self-serve breakfast and then head to your chosen blind before the sun rises.  Lunch, nap, shoot, and savor a homemade dinner, of local recipes made from farm-to-table ingredients.

After dinner, we’ll plan the next day. Let me know which blinds you want to try out for tomorrow’s shoots (most blinds hold three [3] photographers at a time).  When choosing your shoots, don’t forget about nocturnal shoots!

Sleep well and/or continue photographing from one of the night blinds.

Saturday, May 28, 2022
After one last morning shoot, it’s time to depart for home to process the hundreds (thousands?) of images you’ve created on this journey.

Be sure to swap contact info with your new friends before you leave.

Please schedule your flight for the afternoon (2:30 pm or later). Our estimated arrival at the airport in Budapest is between 11:00 am and noon.  Given that you want to arrive 2 ½ to 3 hours before an international departure you won’t want a flight that departs earlier than 2:30 pm

Fly into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD), commonly known as Ferihegy.

This is the main international airport serving Budapest, the capital of Hungary.

The airport is located about 10 miles from Budapest city center.

Arrive at the airport in Budapest, capital of Hungary, by 7:00 pm on May 20th.  Our Welcome Dinner is tentatively set for 7:00 pm.

Budapest is quite an interesting city.  You may want to arrive a couple of days early so you can explore it.  (We’ll include some suggestions in your extensive, full-color dossier.)

If you do, keep in mind that it is 10 miles from the airport.  Therefore, you probably don’t want to lodge in the same hotel where we stay our first night because the Ibis Styles is located is at the airport.

Hungary does not require a visa for U.S. and Canadian citizens who are visiting the country for less than ninety (90) days.

Of the 23 blinds, 11 of them are at the photo ranch where we stay and within easy walking distance. That said, while the terrain is mostly flat, paths are dirt and may be muddy or uneven, especially if there’s been a recent rain.

Access to the remaining 12 blinds is by vehicle (transportation to and from them is provided).

The best focal length lens to bring is a zoom between 200-500 mm lens (100-400, 150-600, etc).  You won’t need a landscape lens on this tour.

Note, this EQUIPMENT CHECKLIST contains suggested gear to bring. You don’t have to bring everything on here. These are just suggestions. If you have ANY questions about what to bring please do not hesitate to contact me.

As is the norm on photo tours, plan to rise before the sun to assure that you’re in the blind in time to catch morning’s sweetest light. Because of this, breakfast is self-serve. You’ll find the kitchen stocked with a variety of meats, cheeses, breads, butter, jam, eggs, yogurt, milk, juice, etc. And, of course there will be coffee!

We spend the first night of the tour (May 20th) at Ibis Styles Budapest Airport Hotel. It’s a short walk from Terminal 2’s baggage claim to the hotel (about 300 feet).

Unless you want to share with someone, you’ll have your own room on this tour; however, during our time at the photo ranch you may have to share a bathroom with another photographer of the same gender. All rooms are within easy walking distance of 11 of the 23 photo blinds.
